Political Science 1020E Lecture 5: Social Justice 2
Document Summary
Rawls: principles we would agree to if we didn"t know the results of the natural and social lotteries. Basically, you shouldn"t know certain things about yourself that will bias your choice. Nozick: justice is about self-ownership, respecting self-ownership rights and private property rights, thereby limiting state interference. Nozik"s view is compatible with massive inequalities, similar to the world we have today- but worse. Three ways to legitimately come to own things (property rights, self-ownership rights) Initial acquisition- a way in which people first own things. Voluntary transfer- make a deal with someone, trade, buy things, free markets in goods. Rectification of injustice- involuntary trade, through exploitation or coercion. Historical, not end-state (rawls- with goal in mind (maximin)), entitlement theory, View of justice (historical)- you don"t know if distribution of rights is legitimate unless you know history. Reject patterned principles of justice like need, ability, or desert. He doesn"t like communism- each person gets their needs satisfied.
