What happened april 18th 1943: 9:35 am, bougainville, papua new guinea, yamamoto"s plane was shot down by an american p-38 fighter plane. Already dead when plane crashed hit by a stray bullet before plane crashed. Second plane carrying other important military personnel also crashed, but passengers survived. 1st 6th fleet, 1st air fleet (11 carriers in early 1943), 11th air. Fleet& southern expeditionary force joint fleet: he was the commander-in-chief during the decisive early years of the pacific war and so was responsible for major battles such as pearl. Japanese fighter bombers crashed into the pearl harbor military base in hawaii: he died when american code breakers identified his flight plans and his plane was shot down. His death was a major blow to japanese military morale during world war ii: control of the guadalcanal, arguably the most important leader of the japanese navy.
