oDaughter of J. Nehru
oFirst female Prime minister of India (1966-77 & 1980-84)
o2nd longest serving female Prime Minister in the world
longest – Prime Minister in Sri Lanka (3 times over 50 years)
oA member of the Nehru Dynasty
oASSASSINATION – OCTOBER 31ST, 1984
Took place in the Prime Minister’s residence before leaving for her daily duties
(was going to give an interview later than day)
Shot and killed by two Sikh bodyguards (she was Hindu herself)
Sikhs – minority group in India – huge population serving in the Indian
army
WHY??
Punjab, Sikhs, Sikh nation, & Khalistan
oWanted to create a completely separate Sikh state (comparable to
Quebec in Canada)
Akali Dal & Anandpur Resolution (1973) – resolution seeking recognition
