Multi party system: can have variations of main categories, e. g. one and a half party system; 2. 5 party system. What a(cid:396)e ca(cid:374)ada"s pa(cid:396)ty syste(cid:373)s: 1867-1920: classic two party system (liberals and conservatives, 1921-1993: two and a half party system from 1921 on, the progressives, then the ccf, then the ndp, always present in. Parliament along with two major parties never quite strong enough to hold party: realignment system realigned in 1921 this is key. The progressive party was formed in 1920. Ontario farmers and prairie farmers (alta, sask and man) united under the leadership of a former federal liberal cabinet minister: thomas crerar. Opposed high tariffs; wanted free trade some wanted a different kind of political party as a new vehicle for change. Both responded by working to slowly eat away at their platform and membership. Prime minister mackenzie king declared he was a reformer and made many promises to follow their calls.
