Document Summary

Science = the knowledge of consequences, and dependence of one fact upon another hobbes (leviathan) Even seems to doubt that god is spiritual. We are made of sensations (experience, interactions) We might be more than sensations the self. The self is what might exist beyond the sensations. Everything else can all be boiled down to hope or fear. Ex: pitty: grief, for the calamity of another, is pity; and arises from the imagination that the like calamity may befall himself; and therefore is called pity. We all define everything with respect to ourselves. We run by passion, desires and hopes (other philosophers think reason rules us) Hobbes says we use reason to get what we want. Some are better than others at reason: these people have studied and learned. Part of proper reasoning is using the best definitions consistently and applying them. Success in obtaining what we want is felicity and that leads to happiness.
