Document Summary

The nature of constitutions and social organization, part 1. Aristotle was concerned with creating the best possible city. Everything aims to develop into something: the end is good. Some things in our lives that end are the means to something else. Happiness for aristotle is not an emotional state. Highest version of happiness is contemplative life (thinking) This life is too di cult for many people and many will be unable to reach true happiness as an end. Humans are composite (made up of many things) The science of the good is politics. Politics decide who should rule in a city, justice, how a city should be good, etc. There are certain activities in life you can only become good at by doing them (ex. being virtuous) Di erence between politics and ethics: politics is a collective form of reasoned action, ethics is an individual form of reasoned action. Types of associations: cities, households/families, villages, natural associations.
