Hobbes had to flee during civil war - more scared and scarred. Locke finds it exciting - not sorry to see absolutist king go. Patron = powerful, helps take care of client. Locke is client of earl of shaftsbury - personal secretary and political advisor. Earl is part of whigamores (scottish landlords) Opposed by tories (irish landlord who persecuted catholics) Next crisis in england - death of charles ii. 1682 - earl plots to overthrow charles ii. 1685 - james ii - more absolutist than charles. James ii flees - new potential sovereign shows up-prince william of orange. Locke returns - main theorists for whigs - rationalizes revolution. Accepts resistance to bad king and revolution. Protects property and gives it greater status.
