Elites: any body of people who act in concert, whether or not knowingly to maintain a shared position of social/political privilege -scruton. Weber"s most famous book: social and economic organization. Bureaucracy is the most ef cient way to organize modern complex organizations holding power. Its not unusual to nd the state concentrating on important modes of transportation/infrastructure when it is concentrating its efforts on exercising legitimacy in larger cities. Traditional: passed down from generation to generation (ex: royal families, queen gets authority from the fact that her father is king, charles will become king upon her death) Charismatic: charisma being a set of exemplary/special qualities which are unusually attractive to other people (ex: ghandi, jesus of nazareth) Legal-rational: authority derived from someone who meets a set of predetermined rules/is legitimately elected into place. These de nitions hardly ever exist in pure form in reality, they are idealistic. Frederick winslow taylor believed bureaucratic organization was the method for grouping power.
