ISRAELI-PALESTINE CONFLICT March 15, 2012
PALESTINE TERRORISM
Suicide attacks
Rocket attacks approx 8600 attacks in Jan of 2009
The actual damage that these rockets have done is surprisingly small, because of the
primitive knowledge and construction of the rockets themselves but the psychological
ramifications are high
Large numbers of PTSD in children because of this
Need to look at the level of public support, it changes in Palestine over the years
Recently newer studies show that Palestinian civilians up to 80% disapprove
There is a very high security threat, government is promising to address it
The policy responses Palestine has chosen is hard lined
Israel is also on the hard line side and they have set up an enormous amount of
checkpoints to monitor the movement of Palestinians, there is a lot of resentment
towards these
Palestinians have been so severely restricted they sometimes cannot even go to work
ISRAEL’S WAR ON GAZA 2006
These are military operations that are responses to militants been captured as hostages
Israel’s response was to watch a war on the Gaza strip where thousands were killed
Raises issues of proportionality, if you have a legitimate reason to engage in action
because of a security concern how much can you actually do
If you have a just cause for war, what is the proportionality for war
Just ad bellum when is war justified there are 4 conditions
Jus in Bello what you can and cannot do in war
BLOCKADE IN GAZA
Tunnels are being built under the roads to lead to Egypt so that Gaza can get food and
supplies through the blockade
Military response against other civilians by Palestine that were actually from other
countries not Israel
Israel because of these attacks has jus ad bellum on its side as protection
Created incredible political problems regional (with Turkey) but also globally and directly
push for Palestinian statehood at the UN in sept 2011
