Interviewer error in recording data: measured variation = true variation + variation due to error. Hard to record, write down entire answer: coding frame list of codes to be used in an analysis of a particular set of data. Delineates the categories used for each open question, while incorporating the fixed answers from closed questions. Intra-coder variation coder varies over time in applying the rules for assigning answers to categories. Inter-coder variability different coders categorize same answers differently. Interview schedule: formal list of questions that the interviewer must follow in detail, in the order given.
