Cleavages > patterns of interaction: features that make different individuals/groups unique (differences, economic status, where you live ie. suburbs, urban, language, what we believe in ie. religion. Main cleavages in canadian politics: regions, economics, individual interests, rational choice self-interested individuals, international events, gender, religion, ethnicity. Move beyond symbol, and try and find higher- level core and values. What an ideal canada should look like. How canadian government formed our identity: created flag, national anthem, etc, took identity from our nations, britain, us. Finally created own identity: at each stage, canadian fought against the stage, always being pushed by international events. Wwi to wwii: beginning of creation of own canadian identity, wwi, able to show some competency, wwii, allowed to become more independent, flex muscles on world stage. (3) the entrepreneurial canadian: stagflation, high unemployment and high inflation, high levels of debt cannot raise more debt, sacrifice, caring-sharing motive gets shoved aside, now building on economics, built on entrepreneurial model.
