Lecture: Distribution of Property Oct 20 , 2011.  Rawls on Justice  Rawls and his Critics  Next time: read Ball & Dagger pgs 1-17 Markets… a. oversupply goods with positive externalities b. undersupply goods with negative externalities c. both a and b d. neither a nor b e. always produce an optimal number of vibrators John Rawls 1921-2002 Rawls: Some Key Ideas - choosing principles of justice - basic structure of society - original position and veil of ignorance - impartiality: “justice as fairness” POPs Must Be Impartial - veil of ignorance rules out Bias - can’t benefit myself at the expense of others - don’t know my intelligence, economic class, talents, sex, ace, social status - self-interest plus ignorance = impartiality What POPs Know - they are in the circumstances of justice - they are moderately self-interested - between scarcity and abundance What Else POPs Know - they have a sense of justice - they have a conception of the good - thin theory of the good, they want primary goods (social basis of self-respect) Constraint on Choosing - physical constraints (not everyone has a castle) - logical constraints (not everyone has rights/high social status) - formal constraints – publicity, finality (contracts, needs to be public) How Would POPs Choose?
