Knowledge is no longer sought for the resemblence of things. Scholars started to focus on differences rather than same-ness. The turn toward difference, de ning the otherserved the interest of imperialism. Binary opposition = one side is priviliged, one is despaired. Helped european minds create/construct their own sense of self. Attempt of many european thinkers to classify and categorize everything found. The relabeling of the world has consequences. The propping up of imperialism and colonialsim. Orientalism is one type of colonial discourse. Demonstrates the link between knowledge and power. Orientalism- a study of how the british and french represented north african people. Looks at these representations in many different disciplines. The orient is concieved as being everything that the west is not.
