Montreal"s de-amalgamation: amalgamation became a campaign issue, quebec liberals had it in their platform. If elected the liberals would allow a process for de-amalgamation to succeed, won the election as a result of this platform. On jan 1st 2006 de-amalgamated municipalities regained their corporate identities. Montreal"s municipal structure: at the top there is the montreal metropolitan community - larger than the city of montreal. Functional responsibilities: regional planning, waste disposal, parks, transit, economic responsibilities, infrastructures, public housing. Mayor serves as chair: agglomeration council - est. 2006, covers entire island and has 31 members. Fully controlled by city of montreal, mayor is the head of the council. 14 mayors of the de-amalgamated municipalities sit on the council. Are wide services like property assessment, social housing, police, re ghting, water supply, sewage treatment: 15 de-amalgamated municipalities. Streets, snow, parks, sports, libraries, urban planning, waste collection: very fragmented municipal structure, confusing. !1: saving money was main argument main by harris government.
