Mucous plug may be lost weeks before labour begins -plug is a barrier of protection between the amniotic sac and the vaginal environment: keeps out bacteria from outside world to protect the baby. Early labor may begin in a variety of ways. May or may not bring on contractions right away. *water breaking isn"t always first sign of labour, water designed to protect baby. Birth: dilation, pushing stage-delivery of the baby, delivery of the placenta. Thinning out of the cervix during labor. The first stage of labour involves dilation from 0-10 centimetres. 7 10 centimetres (the last phase of dilation) At the end of transition the woman can begin pushing with her contractions. Contractions are stronger, come closer together and last longer.
