Document Summary
Males and females differ in reproductive strategy as a result of differences in: reproductive potential and parental investment. Anisogamy: different gamete size (females have greater investment at conception) Generally, female reproductive success limited by number of eggs, seek quality mates and male reproductive success limited by number of mates, seek numerous mates. However, not exclusive: choosey males and competitive females, sex role reversal. Cases where males provide more parental investment than female: female-female aggression, females large and showier than males, males choosy. The sex that provides greater investment will become a resource for which the other sex competes. Wide applicability to sexual selection and mating systems. Polygamy (general term): polygyny, polyandry and polygynandry. Degree of sexual dimorphism may indicate degree of sexual selection and mating system. 80% of human societies have permitted polygyny. Sexual dimorphism consistent with long history of mild polygyny. Different resultant sex differences ie. great apes species variation.
