Ekman and colleagues (1991) found that judges, police officers and other groups performed at the level of chance in determining who was telling the truth. Another meta-analyses by vrij (2000) found a mean 67% accuracy rate for detecting truths and 44% accuracy for detecting lies. People are good at detecting truths but bad at detecting lies. Human beings more often than not assume that people are telling the truth. Truth tellers are more likely to spontaneously correct their story and admit to lack of memory than liars. However some people who lie don"t exhibit these cues.
