Document Summary
Models of memory: sensory registers, short-term memory, long-term memory. Memory - processes that allow us to record and later retrieve experience & information. 3 component model of memory: sensory registers, short-term memory, long-term memory. Allows us to acquire knowledge, know and connect with others again. Gives us a sense of personal history and links the past to the present. Allows us to define who we are. Sensory register - holds information just long enough for it to be recognized (ionic and echoic), incoming information. Short term - information we are conscious of at any point in time, where we manipulate rehearse and encode information to move into long term memory. Important terms: encoding - getting information into the system by translating it into neural code that the brain processes, automatic processing - encoding that occurs without intention & requires minimal attention. Your routine this morning: effortful processing - encoding that is initiated intentionally & requires conscious attention.
