Definition: approaches to personality, motivational (i) psychoanalytic. Each of us have unique personality and each of us have an individuality. Personality (text book): a distinctive and relatively stable pattern of behavior, thoughts, motives and emotions that characterize an individual. Personality can change however it tends to remain stable. Freud"s theory of personality is the motivational approach. Motives are the causes of behavior, they activate, guide and maintain behavior overtime. For freud however; they have a service for one thing is to reduce tension because tension is unpleasant. Every fiber in our body is used to reduce tension. Therefore freud explains motives only serve one purpose and that is to reduce unpleasant tension. Species/preservative > self preservative - species destructive (war) > self destructive (suicide) Female genitals + male genitals > oral + anal. Freud"s theory suggests that species preservative instincts can affect personality. The consequences on life instincts (oral and anal) can affect personality.
