Document Summary

Memory: processes that allow us to record and later retrieve experiences and information. 3 component model of memory: sensory registers, short-term memory, long-term memory. Encoding: getting information into the system by translating it into neural code that the brain processes. Automatic processing: encoding that occurs without intention and requires minimal attention: ex. Effortful processing: encoding that is initiated intentionally and requires conscious attention: ex. making study notes. Memory codes: once information leaves the sensory registry it must be represented by some types of code to be retained in short term memory and transferred into long term memory: mental representations. Sematic encoding: focus on the meaning of a stimulus. Storage: involves retaining information over time (i. e. filling it away and saving it for later) Retrieval: pulling information out of long-term storage when we want to use it. Sensory registers: the initial information processors, can only retain information for a few seconds, echoic (auditory)
