Document Summary
Control mechanism: positive (increase level) or negative feedback (decrease level, maintain steady states. Basic biological control: orienting responses or taxes. Overall musculature response towards (positive) or away from (negative) a stimulus. Positive photo taxis in moth (go towards light and increase speed of flight) slugs have negative geotaxis detects gravity and movies away, roaches are negative: homeostatic mechanism. Brain has central ns and peripheral ns (autonomic and skeletal) Autonomic- sympathetic and parasympathetic are working against one another (antagonistic) Gears up for action eg activation: accelerated heart rate. Inhibition of peristalsis: vasoconstriction (blood vessels shrink) Conserves eg activation: decelerated heart rate, stimulation of peristalsis, vasodilatation (blood vessels increase) Related to emotion (act up, freeze, in shock) Why?: pupil dilation means that they are aroused, so you think they are aroused and they become more attractive. In genral, hess suggests: pupil dilation for positive, constriction for negative, support uneven but we like big eyes.
