Kids at a couple of weeks old can figure out angles and stuff. There is a relationship between oxytocin and arousal. Newborns cannot discriminate odours: false: they can distinguish odours. What influences development: nature vs nurture; stage vs continuous, normative vs individual, cross-sectional vs longitudinal. Published several hundreds of papers and books, as early as teenage years. Observed own children: found that kids don"t think the same way as adults, 4 stages of development. Note: age ranges approximate, stages not completely independent. 4 stages: sensory-motor intelligence (0-2 years, preoperational (2-7 years, period of concrete operations (7-11, period of formal operations (11+) How do young children think: sensory- motor stage: Nothing exists apart from the child"s own perceptions and motor reactions. Look at the organization of sensory and motor reactions (piaget schema) At birth: a variety of reflexes, at first, schemas operates in isolation. Coordination of activities not present until 5 months (both hands are about 7 months)
