The self: an organized, consistent set of perceptions of beliefs about oneself. Once formed, the self plays a powerful role in guiding our perceptions and directing our behaviors. Children initially cant distinguish between themselves and the environment. Interacting with the environment, they begin to distinguish between me and it. Self consistency: an absence of conflict among self-perceptions. Any experience we have that is inconsistent with our self concept, including our perceptions of our won behavior, evokes threat and anxiety. 2 main topics: the development of self esteem and its effects on behavior, the roles on self enhancement and self consistency motives. Self esteem: refers to how positively or negatively we feel about yourself. Starting point for trait researchers is to find he behaviors that define a particular trait. For example: list all the behaviors of an extravert. In 1936 trait theorist gordon alloport went through the dictionary and recorded all the words that could be used to describe a person.
