First recorded use of psychoactive drugs in sports was in the olympic games in ancient greece o. Athletes ate hallucinogenic mushrooms as early as 300 b. c. e. Roman gladiators used stimulants to sustain themselves longer in competition, even when injured. End of 19th century: athletes experimenting w stimulant and depressant drugs; cocaine, caffeine, alcohol, nitroglycerine, opioids, strychnine, and amphetamines. Welsh cyclist overdosed on morphine and cocaine (speedball) and died. 20th century: tom hicks collapsed and lost consciousness after winning a race in the 1904. He took a lethal dose of strychnine (cns stimulant when administered in low doses) and brandy. Conditions that caused the muscles to waste away. 1930s: introduction of anabolic steroids - changed the structure of an athletes body. Administered to people sick from weight loss/starvation around the end of wwii o. Became apparent that these could also be administered to healthy people o. Pharmaceutical companies began introducing body building drugs based on the testosterone molecule.
