Behavior based on superstitions in past centures: speaking to the devil, exorcisim, despite improvement from medical model: critics suggest that this model is no longer useful, deviation from social norms rather than illness, stigma of mental illness. Judges to have psych disorder b/c their everyday functinong in interfered with: personal distress, troubled by something that is experienced, viewed as disordered when one criterion is met(cid:224) all 3 is not required, continuum: normal abnormal, not distinct, clearly separate but rather ranging from normal to abnormal, many behaviors fall somewhere in the middle. Learning: developed through classical conditioning and maintained through operant conditioning, classical conditioning (cid:224) an originally neutral stimulus (dog) paired with, operant conditioning [negative reinforcement] (cid:224) person then avoids frightening event (bite) stimulus, reducing anxiety. Etiology: cognitive factors [styles of thinking, misinterpret harmless situations as threatening, focus excessive attention on perceived threats, selectively recall information that seems threatening, stress, high stress contributes to the onset of anxiety disorders.
