Part 1: the physiology of pain reception: the body experiences tissue damage, algogenic substances are released at the site of the damage, free nerve endings are stimulated in the damaged areas (they are called nociceptors - pain fibers). It activates the immune system & causes inflammation (area becomes red & swollen).
