Mood, personality traits, environment and stress level influence responses to symptoms. Good mood can mask aches and pains and report fewer symptoms and illness-related thoughts. Bad mood: less likely to believe that any behaviours they engage in will relieve symptoms and assume their more vulnerable to future illness. More vulnerable to illness if experience more stress. Those who experience tremendous stress are more likely to seek healthcare than those under less stress but with equal symptoms. Some studies report than women are more sensitive to internal state. Women will seek healthcare more than men but may delay longer in seeking that care. Men attribute minor symptoms to major problems more readily than women. Elderly report more symptoms and seek more health care. Perceive normal age-related bodily changes as an illness.
