There are two ways in which we can think of things changing over the course of development. We see a change in the size of the person, but we also see changes in the specification of structures over time that come with refining things over time. Also if you look at different children they"re going in different ways and they differentiate in different ways, like between boys and girls (rate and differentiation). Point of origin for development is conception when the sperm fertilizes the egg. At this time a unique genome is established, chromosome from sperm other from egg, ending with 23 pairs. It takes a long time before this genome actually starts expressing itself because the cells have to multiply many hundreds of thousands of times. Inside the nucleus in the cell is where the chromosomes are located, those chromosomes are not condensed usually at this time.
