General patterns of physical development: greatest physical growth tends to start at the top of the body and down cephalocaudal. Brain develops faster, eyes develop faster than mouth etc: rst and faster centre of the body to the extremities (inside out torso, then arms) Neuronal migration: genes determine neuronal migration. Monday, october 23, 2017: migration/location dictates function, where the cell ends up determines what the neuron is going to do. Neuronal function: neurons have potential for any function, neurons become specialized. Myelinization: provides insulation for neurons, increases rate of transmission of electrical impulses, continues throughout childhood, plays a role in more e cient motor control, cognitive processing. More e cient information processing think faster and more clearly. Reduces redundancy in systems (results in a more streamlined or e cient system) (neuro) plasticity: ability of neurons to change in structure and function.
