Lecture 3 early intervention supports and services. Birth of a child can be overwhelming for the parents. Challenges can eel daunting, even under the best of circumstances. When the fetus has exceptionalities, the anxiety intensifies. During the 5th month, a fetus has more brain cells than the average adult. At birth, infants show preference for + ability to recognize: 1) human voice, 2) human faces + facial expressions + gestures, 3) their mother, 4) visual stimuli, 5) smells. Windows of opportunity: sensitive time periods in the child"s development when i. e. if children receive speech/language services by age 3, they"re problem learning is easiest/optimal for a certain skill. free by age 5. Realisation that with the right supports/services provided early, we can significantly improve the outcomes of children at risk . Ontario human rights act (1962) allowed young children access to early intervention: funding by the ministry of children + youth services = allowed accessibility.
