Document Summary
The concepts of our sense of self (self-schemas) make up our self concept: beliefs, perception of appearance, expectations , broad set of ideas. Self concept clarity can be influenced by situational factors: usually including a major transition, situations including self esteem, situations including relationships example breaking up with people. Relationship breakup changes self concept (thought you were happy now u are depressed) , reduces clarity, contributes to subjective sense of self being smaller than it was before. Cultural differences in self concepts: in individualist cultures (ex. Canada) people tend to have an independent view of the self. The self is defined in term"s of one"s own thoughts, feelings and: in collectivist cultures (japan) people tend to have an interdependent view of the self. The self is defined in terms of one"s relationship to others. The self is often determine by thoughts, feelings and behaviours of others (less consistent/stable?) Because they are based on a variety of experiences with different people.
