(1) optimistic or pessimistic do you think you will maintain the relationship or do you see this bump as it falling apart. (1) active pessimist exit (you leave) (2) active optimist voice ( work on improvement, voice concerns) (3) passive pessimist neglect (wait for a breakup, neglect problem) Gottman is considered the classic study for looking at communication styles. Contacted the couples again 4 yrs later and asked how the relationship was going. Asked: have they considered leaving, or have they actually serrated in the 4 yrs since the study. For mostly neg. the risk of probe doubled, 71% considered, and 36% left.
