He thought attention was all or none. You either attend to something or you don"t. Broadbent thought attention was all or nothing too. You are giving a certain amount of processing capacity to something, and then giving the rest to other things. Attention is giving something adequate processing capacity to make sense of it. People conclude that some things can be processed without attention, does not draw from pool of capacity, automatically processed. How does it happen: there is a stimulus, then you perceive it. Perception yields something (image, idea) in your short term memory (stm). Wednesday, november 23, 2016: eg. female vs male voices. Intensity differences: if somebody speaking loud and someone soft, you can attend to the soft speaker if you want to. Location differences: you can decide to attend to whats going on way over there, and not what"s going on in front of you, horizontally separate most useful.
