Document Summary
Number of wavelengths that pass given point in given amount of time. Measured in cycles per second, known as hertz. Fundamental frequency refers to the lowest frequency produced by vibrating object. Adult males generally have a fundamental frequency in the range of 75-150hz and adult females in the range of 150-300hz. Frequencies higher than the fundamental is known as overtones. Amount of change a wave undergoes in one cycle. Basilar membrane extends inside cochlea and dividing it in two. The surface of basilar membrane is covered with hair cells. Hair cells near the entrance to the cochlea are sensitive to the highest frequency and those further down are sensitive to low frequencies. This arrangement is like a piano keyboard going from right to left and referred as tonotopically organization. Primary auditory cortex (a1) is the brain region that does the initial processing of the input from the cochlea, arranged in tonotopically like basilar membrane.
