Mapping language in the brain by studying: effect of brain damage on language (aphasia, brain imaging. Brain damage in adults that leads to loss of some aspects of language. Patient presents with major language disturbance: has lost almost all ability to speak, can say a fewer swear words, and the word tan . Patient seemed to have normal language comprehension: could also use gestures to communicate. At autopsy, patient"s brain showed a large lesion in the left frontal lobe. Suggested that speech could be impaired separately from other abilities: patient had ok oral motor abilities, didn"t show serious cognitive impairment. Showed that a specific brain region could be causing these kinds of problems: left hemisphere, frontal lobe, possible just one part of the frontal lone. In 1874, found that many patients with intact left frontal lobe still had language problems.
