Aristotle: language served as a tool for they communicaion of thought. Chomsky and fodor: language funcions as a separate mental process from the rest of cogniive funcions although it may exchange informaion with those systems for the purpose of communicaion. Language directly inluences the way we think: ater chomsky"s tg (linguisic universals), cross-linguisic diferences declined. Lexical and syntacic diferences are accompanied by non-linguisic cogniive diferences. Culture diferences in thinking are accompanied by linguisic diferences between cultures: linguisic determinism. Culture thinking diferences were the direct result of diferences in their languages: cross-cultural comparisons. Whorf: inuit have seven terms for snow but there are many diferent inuit language. Layman: stm and ltm, cogniive psychologists: sensory registers and so on. Whorf: hopi don"t have term for ime, think in terms of events. Strong view language determines thought by seeing if the cogniive system can make disincions that are not linguisically represented.
