Psychology 2134A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Syntactic Ambiguity, Lexicon, Syntactic Category
Document Summary
Two views on sentence comprehension: iniial syntacic parsing of a sentence are autonomous, semanic informaion can be used to guide lexical access and syntacic analysis. Lexical -> syntacic -> semanic: if the low of informaion is only botom-up, the system is modular, semanic sub processor can inluence syntacic and lexical processes. Hypothesis: sentence comprehension occur in a series of stage from lexical access to pragmaic analysis, with each earlier stage working autonomously from informaion at the later stages. Minimize cogniive efort late closure: the process of trying atach new parts of a sentence to the phrase or clause that is currently being processed. Beyond the modularity debate: new evidence non-syntacic informaion (visual informaion) can afect the iniial parsing of spoken sentences. We try to integrate every word into develop mental representaion: depends on botom-up processing but the processing is not exclusively botom-up.
