Document Summary

Primary sensory cortex: the area of a sensory cortex that receives most of its input directly from the thalamic relay nuclei. Secondary sensory cortex: areas of the sensory cortex that receives most of its input from the primary sensory cortex or from other areas of the secondary cortex of the same system. Association cortex: any area of the cortex that receives input from more than one sensory system. The interactions among these three types of sensory cortex and among other sensory structures are characterized by three major principles hierarchical organization, functional segregation and parallel processing. Functional segregation: each level of the cerebral cortex (primary, secondary, association) in each contain functionally distinct areas that specialize in different kinds of analysis. The function of the auditory system is the perception of sound. Sounds are vibrations of air molecules that stimulate the auditory system.
