Lecture 11- eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, pica- eating things that are not nutritional- hair, rumination disorder- regurgitating their food, avoidant/restrictive food. Intake disorder- extremely picky eaters and led to them being under weight. Anorexia nervosa: restriction of energy intake (calories), leading to significantly low body weight relative to age, gender and physical health. Involves very restricted eating, starts out them avoiding certain foods and then gradually eating less and less until they are significantly underweight: bmi less than 17. 5- taking weight in kg dividing by height. Intense fear of gaining weight or being fat. Binge-eating disorder (dsm-5) - new to dsm5: recurrent episodes of binge eating. Causal theories: biology, genetics, bulimia- 23% mz vs. 9% dz, anorexia- 50% mz vs. 9% dz, so there is a genetic factor associated with eating disorders, serotonin- low serotonin associated with craving for sweets, carbohydrates.
