Lecture 12- psychological factors affecting medical conditions (health psychology) Dsm approaches: dsm-ii- psychophysiological disorders, replaced psychosomatic disorders --> called them psychophysiological. Included in: somatic symptoms and related disorders: a medical symptoms or condition (other than a mental disorder) is present. This can include any type of medical condition: disease with clear pathophysiology, e. g. , diabetes, cancer, coronary disease, functional syndromes, e. g. , migraine, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia. Feeling grandeur, and have abilities that others don"t have --> don"t trust doctors because they don"t know anything) Influence the course of the illness development (not engaging in health-promoting behaviors), exacerbation (really sick and then get bad news (psychological stress) --> causes the illness to get worse and then --> causes a delay recovery. Interfere with treatment of the illness for example: someone who is very hostile toward medical profession, person refuses to take medication from them so they don"t get better- certain personality style is affecting the treatment.
