WHY IS IT A CONCERN?

- can be observed before age 6

- 3K prescription for antidepressant for infants under 12 months of age

- limited cognitive ability, lack of verbal self-report

PURPOSE?

- compare depression in preschool children using standard vs modified DSM

- standard DSM criteria missed a lot of preschoolers

METHODS

- modified- removed length and # of symptoms

4 groups:

- standard DSM

- modified DSM

- 2 control groups (ADHD and ODD)

- no disorder

- Berkley Puppet Interie child report

- Diagnostic Interview Schedule for children and questionnaire (parent report)

standard missed 75% preschoolers with symptoms
