Theory: a language of science that allows us to assemble and communicate existing knowledge effectively. Etiology: the study of the causes of childhood disorders. There are always multiple, interactive causes for a disorder. We need both the individual and their environment in order to understand disorder. Early onset conduct problems: you see at a very young age, and it persists throughout later stages in life. Also called continuity: developmental changes are gradual and quantitative; predictive of future behavior patterns. Late onset conduct problems: happens in a stage of your life, does not necessarily affect later life, e. g. you do drugs in teen years, but you stop. Discontinuity: developmental changes are abrupt and qualitative, not predictive of future behavior. Piaget was french, came up with theories by watching his kids. Organization: arranging information into structures he called schemes (schema)
