Poorly designed --> by product, output thought and behaviour. Easier to tell big ratio tell apart things from each other. Not just size between numbers, also size of the actual numbers. Ratio of first two are 2:1 and second 12:11, bigger ratio easier to tell apart: ratio limit = smallest limit that people can detect a difference between two sets of arrays. Eg 18:10 , 20:19 cant discriminate 11:14: ratio limit decreases across development. Newborns 3:1, 6 months old 2:1, 9 month old 3:2, adults less than 3:2 ratio. Even newborns have capacity to tell apart some objects, not precise but still present: modality independent. Izard et al (2009: took infants (2 day old) and divided them into two groups and had two phases. What experience during them was repeated sequence of syllables, auditory, hearing same string of syllables over again.
