• Being a Clinical Psychologist • What is … • A Psychologist: – a scientist/clinician who studies psychology – Must hold a doctorate degree (PhD/PsyD) – Known often by their area of specialty e.g. cognitive, social, forensic, clinical • Mental Health – “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community” – World Health Organization • Clinical Psychologist: – “Clinical psychology is a broad field of practice and research within the discipline of psychology, which applies psychological principles to the assessment, prevention, amelioration, and rehabilitation of psychological distress, disability, dysfunctional behaviour, and health-risk behaviour, and to the enhancement of psychological and physical well-being.”- CPA  Clinical psychologists often have 6-7 years of training beyond the bachelors degree  Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)  Often the Scientist-Practitioner model  Focus on the development of effective assessment, prevention, and intervention services for emotional distress and well being • Role of Clinical Psychologists • Assessments – 3 categories: tests, interviews, observations • Psychotherapy • Research • Consult • Educate/teach • Realities of Profession • Almost half of practicing psychologists work in private practice (full time or part time). • There has been a major shift away from salaried employee positions in hospitals and clinics. • E
