Reading as a cultural invention: there is no such thing as a reading brain", we aren"t born with a brain that helps us to read, reading is a recent cultural invention (people used to write" through symbols/pictures) Cohen, 2008: object recognition word recognition, writing systems must have evolved to fit" the processing characteristics of particular brain circuits. We have increasingly refined our writing systems throughout history so that preexisting brain systems for object recognition can process them: there are implications for the difficulty of learning. We find the things most difficult when there is a large gap between our writing systems and how our brain processes it. Reading is a multi-componential skill: through reading we create meanings in our heads.
