Same force that drives search for love and intimacy motivate dark side of human emotions (rape, revenge, jealousy: these dark emotions aren"t confined to pathology, particular cultures- they are built in ground level of human nature. Male violence almost always portrayed as attempt to control female partner/punish her for some imagined or real behaviour: woman is cast as helpless, bullied victim. Women routinely killed more often than men by their partners and men more commonly arrested than women for intimate violence. Most of this research used conflict tactics scale (originally made by murray straus and published in 1979), a longer version was developed and published 17 years later. These results revealed higher crime victim rates than previous surveys suggested. Married couples 16% of couples report at least one act of physical violence a year. Dating/cohabiting couples double married rate 30: the research bombshell. Rates of violence both minor and major reported by men and women were roughly equivalent.
