Stress March 12, 2013  Next Time: Freud  Scan: page 543 – 550  Agenda: o The Stress Response o Psychosomatic Disorders o Traumatic Stress  Question: o What causes stress? o Are there consequences of prolonged stress? o How can you protect yourself against stress?  Stress: o A pattern of physiological, behavioural, emotional, and cognitive responses to real or imagined stimuli  Stress Process o Stressors  Catastrophes  i.e. natural disasters, tsunami  Life changes  i.e. death of a spouse (100), divorce, marital separation etc.  Hassles  Daily hassles buildup o Intervening factors  Appraisal  Perceived control  If you think you have control over it, your fine  Personality  Certain type of people are going to get stressed more than the other  Social support  Anyone that you can talk to when stressed, it is good to talk to someone  Coping o Stress reactions  Physiological  Emotional  Behavioural  Sense stressor o Sympathetic nervous system sends signal to:  Adrenal medulla dumps epinephrine into the blood stream o Signal to hypothalamus  Anterior pituitary controls hormones, then the adrenal cortex (outside) they dump glucocorticoids (cortisol) go into the blood stream  Cortisol o Effects similar to epinephrine o Coverts protein to glucose o Makes fats available for energy o Increased blood flow o Almost every cell in body have receptor for glucocorticoids  So all the cells in the body can respond  Immune System o Stress can suppress the immune system, making the person more vulnerable o How?  Stress results in release of glucocorticoids, directly suppressing the action of white blood cells  Support? o Rats faced with inescapable shock showed a decrease in lymphocyte production o Husbands show decreased immune response after wife’s death o People are more likely to get sick a few days after exposure to stressful event o Acute infectious disorders increased during final exams  If exams was announced a long time before it generates less stress than a surprise exam  Note: o Reaction depends on appraisal o Do you perceive that situation is a threat and that you cannot cope  distress  Psychosomatic Disorders o Disorders wi
