Jew derived from judah the name of the territory that in ancient time was considered to be the jewish homeland. Semitic derived from shem : the name of the man from whom both jews &arabs descended. Modern scholars say torah is a composite text, comprising various documents composed at different times by human beings. Documentary hypothesis theory that still dominates modern discussions of the torah question. Theory that the pentateuch was not written by 1 person (moses) but was compiled over a long period of time from multiple sources; purposed by the german scholars julius. Wellhausen in 1883: has had a powerful influence.
