Mental illness indirectly affects all canadians at some time through a family member, friend, or colleague. In any given year, 1/5 people in canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness. Mental illness affects people of all ages, education, income levels, and cultures. 8% of adults will experience major depression at some time in their lives. All of us lie somewhere on the mental health continuum, depending on our unique genetic makeup, environmental factors, family dynamics, and stressors in our lives. Mental wellness: at one end of the continuum is mental wellness; exists when there is a reasonably balance in all aspects of one"s life- physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and spiritual. Mental illness: at the other end is mental illness; refers to a range of emotional and mental health problems that may be long-lasting and that may interfere with family, school, social, or work related activities.
