Social work is a profession committed to the celebration of diversity, equality, and social justice. The comfort and power accorded to people who are in, or are expected to be in, a relationship with a person of a different sex and who conform to dominant gender norms. Sexology: a field of study that attempted to classify sexual desire and gender identity. Use of positivistic science to explain the world around us including gender and sexual orientation. Medicalization: biological component; something to be treated, not punished. Much of the concern around sexual normality and abnormality focused on whether people were engaging in sex primarily for reproduction (normal) or pleasure (deviant) Vocal in the fight to de-criminalize sodomy (anal sex) One of the pioneers of gay and lesbian rights movement. In 1885, as a result of activists such as ulrichs, berlin police stopped closing down gay bars. Years following early exploration, second generation of sexologists emerged.
